HealthlinkOnline is a 3-tiered .NET application providing for the secure transfer of patient information in real time. Message files are formatted in HL7 (Health Level 7) version 2.4 and XML (Extensible Mark-up Language) version 2.0. Files are transferred to and from hospital servers using VPN connections and are processed using MSMQ. Users login to the secure website via SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). A server certificate authenticates the service to the user, while a client certificate authenticates the user to HealthlinkOnline.

The application is also accessible via web service calls, meaning the accredited Practice Management Systems can integrate patient information automatically without opening the website. Web service calls are also used to generate referral messages from within the Practice Management System which are then sent on to the hospital via Healthlink.

The current infrastructure is flexible and scalable and we strive to ensure that further system developments adhere to national guidelines set out by the HSE, HIQA and the ICGP.

Message Types

Messages fall into two categories, outbound and inbound, reflecting the two-way communication capabilities of HealthlinkOnline.
