October 2005 - Healthlink: An IT System in Irish Health Service is Delivering

In the recent climate of controversy over two of the biggest IT projects in the Healthcare sector in Ireland, it is good to hear that one IT project is delivering value for money. "The National Healthlink Project is successfully demonstrating how to build an IT system which is scalable on a National level and delivering value for money" states Gemma Garvan, Deputy Project Manager for Healthlink. The National Healthlink Project allows General Practitioners to receive vital patient information from hospitals including Laboratory Results, Radiology Results, A&E Attendances and Discharge Summary messages. The project was remodeled in 2002 and released the HealthlinkOnline system in October 2003. The system was released to the Mater and Limerick Regional Hospitals and all their General Practices in 2003. Since then, the project has successfully been deployed to Beaumont Hospital, St James Hospital, Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown with St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin, the HSE Midland (Mullingar, Tullamore and Portlaoise Hospitals) along with the HSE Western (Merlin Park, University Hospital Galway and Mayo General Hospitals) all signed up to the system. This IT project is actively achieving the goals set out in the National Health Strategy for an integrated National Healthcare System without the use of high profile consultancy and within Budget. It is hoped that the HSE will look at the model used to build this successful National System and continue to distribute funding to enable this successful project to expand to it's full potential.
