The team, including Dr. Niall Tubridy, Consultant Neurologist at St. Vincent's were presented with a certificate in the Category "Innovative Management of Services including Technology & Communication Innovation". Neurolink is designed to alleviate problems associated with neurological referrals from GPs including long waiting lists, errors in postal referrals, administration time and patient anxiety.

The Healthlink Lab Ordering service was shortlisted (from 260 entrants to 1 of 40) for the Innovation Awards. The project was commended in the areas of implementation and partnership. It presented good solid results and showed great potential for replication.

October 2006 - Launch of Online Laboratory Ordering

Healthlink & the Mater Hospital Lab are the first in Ireland to offer GPs the ability to order blood tests online. This functionality provides great accuracy in the area of patient demographics, emergency contact phone number and clinical details. The interface can also calculate the correct number of specimens to send with the order based on the items ordered. It is also hoped that this message will eventually be integrated into the Practice Management System also providing a complete patient history for orders placed and results received. Commenting on this new service, Geraldine Gleasure, a Dublin-based practice nurse, said: "There is no longer a need for nurses to write out each patient's demographics, they can now simply search for them on the system and the results of all the tests ordered online can be sent back electronically, so there is no need for your practice to re-key in the information. This has a serious impact on waiting time for patients and allows practices to deliver a much more efficient service to their patients". Commenting on the rollout of the laboratory ordering function, Gemma Garvan from the National Healthlink Project outlined: "The project's success in the Mater University Hospital has resulted in interest from Beaumont Hospital and St James's Hospital. Healthlink are in the early stages of discussions in relation to enabling the lab order service in these hospitals later this year".
